This is the most common question about coatings and the one most often answered badly. There is no universal number, because the same product on two different cars will behave differently depending on how they live.

What follows is what actually moves the figure, so you can judge your own situation.

What Shortens A Coating's Life

Poor Preparation

This is the biggest single factor and it happens before the coating even goes on. If oils, wax or bonded contamination are left on the paint, the coating cannot bond properly, and a coating that never bonded properly will not last regardless of what the bottle claims.

Washing Method

Automatic washes with brushes will physically abrade a coating. Harsh degreasers and traffic film removers will strip it. Both will cut years off.

Where The Car Parks

A car parked outside in full Brisbane sun year round is under constant UV load. Add coastal salt air and it works harder again. A garaged car has an easier life by a wide margin.

Kilometres And Where They Are Driven

Highway kilometres mean bug residue, tar and grit. A car doing short suburban trips is exposed to far less.

How To Tell If Yours Is Still Working

Most people judge by water beading, which is a reasonable indicator but an unreliable one on its own.

A coated surface that is simply dirty or has traffic film on it will stop beading properly even though the coating underneath is fine. Before assuming it has failed, wash the car properly with a clean mitt and a suitable shampoo, dry it, and check again. A surprising number of coatings declared dead are just contaminated.

Genuine signs of a coating wearing out include water sheeting flat rather than beading even on a properly cleaned car, dirt starting to cling the way it did on bare paint, and the surface losing the slickness it had when it was new.

Making It Last

• Wash using two buckets with a clean mitt, or a touchless method where practical.
• Stay out of automatic brush washes entirely.
• Dry the car rather than letting it air dry, particularly in the sun.
• Get bird droppings and sap off promptly rather than leaving them to bake on.
• Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on coated panels.
• Have it looked at periodically rather than waiting until it has clearly gone.

Maintenance Beats Replacement

A coating that is decontaminated and maintained on a sensible cycle holds its behaviour much longer than one left alone until it visibly fails. It is also far cheaper than a full strip, correct and reapply.
